Writers. –
Consult with a writer. Each writer will donate two hours to your work. The first hour will be to read what you send, and the second will be a critique session discussing your work either in person, by email, by phone, or virtually. Writers will look at 3-5 poems, a short story, a chapter, a nonfiction essay, a children’s story, or a one-act play, depending on the writer’s genre.

Trish Reeves
Trish Reeves's poetry fellowships and awards include: National Endowment for the Arts, Yaddo, Keck, Kansas Arts, Cleveland State Poetry Center Prize, and the Liberty Bell Award from Johnson County Bar Association for 21 years leading Changing Lives Through Literature for Johnson County Corrections. She received an MFA from Warren Wilson, and a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri. For 21 years, Reeves taught English and Creative Writing at Haskell Indian Nations University. She was a Humanities Kansas scholar in literature until the Trump Administration cut HK's funding in April 2025. – 3-5 poems
Michael Pritchett
Michael Pritchett is the author of the 2020 novella Tania the Revolutionary, now available on Kindle/Amazon, The Melancholy Fate of Capt. Lewis (Unbridled Books, 2007) and The Venus Tree, winner of an Iowa Short Fiction Award (the John Simmons Short Fiction Award) in 1988 and published by the University of Iowa Press. He is the winner of the 2000 Dana Award for a novel-in-progress for his novel, The Final Effort of the Archer. The title story from his collection appeared in the anthology The Iowa Award: The Best Stories from 20 Years, University of Iowa Press, 1990. He received Special Mention in the 2019 Pushcart anthology for his Pushcart-nominated novel excerpt "A Sort of Woman," New Letters magazine. His work has recently appeared in The Laurel Review, Your Impossible Voice, Slippery Elm, ArLiJo, Solstice, New Letters and the I-70 Review. Barbara Loots
A poet with publishing credits going back fifty years, Barbara Loots can be especially helpful as a coach in rhyme, meter, and traditional forms like sonnet, villanelle, and blank verse, which are trending once again in the poetry universe. She’s also known for funny, with many appearances in Light Poetry Magazine online. She’ll be interested in whatever work you’d like to talk about. A copy of her book Windshift is included. 3- 5 Poems
Catherine Anderson
Catherine Anderson is the winner of the 2025 Birdy Poetry Prize with Meadowlark Press for her book of poems, Afloat. She has published four other collections of poetry: Everyone I Love Immortal, Woman with a Gambling Mania, The Work of Hands and In the Mother Tongue, as well as a memoir, My Brother Speaks in Dreams: Of Family, Beauty & Belonging. She has been recognized for her poetry by the Massachusetts Artists’ Foundation, the Southern Humanities Review, the I-70 Review, the Crab Orchard Review and other journals. She co-facilitates the Poetry Reading Circle, sponsored by the Kansas City Writers’ Place.

Cate Browder
Catherine Browder’s most recent book, Resurrection City: Stories from the Disaster Zone, won the Spokane Prize and she has won the Hefner Heitz Kansas Book Award. Her first novel, The Manning Girl by Regal House Publishing won their Petrichor Prize. Other story collections and novellas have been published by BkMk Press, Milkweed, Southern Methodist University Press, Helicon Nine, Ploughshares Solos (in E-book, Audible), and in numerous journals. She’s received fiction fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Missouri Arts Council. She served as facilitator for The Memory Project at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, taught ESL and in the creative writing program at UMKC, and served as an advisory editor for New Letters. One-act play or a short story.
Frank Higgins – (drama and poetry)
Frank Higgins is the author of several plays, including Black Pearl Sings!, which became one of the most professionally produced plays in America, and The Sweet By ‘n’ By, the latter produced with Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow. His work has been performed in New York and across the country at major theaters. In Kansas City his work has appeared at Kansas City Rep, the Unicorn, the Coterie, Spinning Tree and the Melting Pot. His plays have been published by Dramatists Play Service, Samuel French, Dramatic Publishing Company, and Pioneer Drama Service. His one-act play The True Death of Socrates is included in the Best American Short Plays series. Scenes from his play Gunplay: A Play About America were read on Capitol Hill prior to Congress passing the Brady Bill. He has also written plays for young audiences, including Anansi the Spider and The Middle Passage, and The Country of the Blind. He has published books of poetry and a new book of haiku, on Earth as it is. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, and the Haiku Society of America. one-act play or poetry
Jennifer Maritza McCauley
Jennifer Maritza McCauley is the author of When Trying to Return Home (Counterpoint), SCAR ON/SCAR OFF (Stalking Horse Press), Kinds of Grace (Flower Song Press) and the forthcoming books VERSUS (Texas Review Press) and NEON STEEL (Cornerstone Press/U.Wisc-Stevens Point.) A World War II Army photographer, Lyle S. Wessale was a graduate of Yale University's Progressive School of Photography and Indiana's Winona School of Photography. He was awarded the "Master of Photography" degree in 1959 by Professional Photographers of America Inc. and in 1967 elected as an Associate of the Photographic Society of America. Hundreds of his prints have been exhibited in photographic salons around the world, and his awards include eight gold and two silver medals. He has also received numerous "Best of Show" and First Place awards at art fairs in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida. Value $30
Jim Murray book Just for Kicks –a very rare book of sports drawings of the KC Chiefs and NFL Stars
Early drawings of the Kansas City Chiefs and other selected NFL stars. The drawings are part of a collection created by artist Jim Murray. The majority of these were published on the sports pages of the Kansas City Star and Times between the 1960s and early 1980s. They were discovered in a storage box. A knowledgeable sports fan, Murray was a three-sport athlete in high school and received a scholarship to play college football at the University of Missouri.
